Cocktails With: Klaus Ortlieb

With the exciting opening of The Hotel Modern New Orleans, Tidbits booked some time with Klaus Ortlieb, acclaimed hotelier and managing partner of this new NOLA respite, to find out what brings out the naughty side in him and in this new overnight hotspot…

TIDBITS: How many hotels have you been involved in starting up?
KLAUS: The Hotel Modern is lucky number 13!

TIDBITS: The most beautiful women in the world live in…
KLAUS: Brazil and New York (and of course the South, too!)

TIDBITS: We all have baggage (even when not traveling). Tell us your top three vices.
KLAUS: Smoking cigarettes, a glass of wine on the rocks and eating candy and sweets (which is why there are candy-filled dishes in all of the rooms of the Hotel Modern).

TIDBITS: What elements make a hotel room feel like a true home away from home?
KLAUS: For me, I think it is the decor. Your home is filled with little knickknacks and things that make your space feel special and interesting. So I always have books in my hotels, and antiques and vintage art in the rooms to add a personal touch.

TIDBITS: The Hotel Modern as a cocktail: what would it be and why?
KLAUS: It would be a classic cocktail but with a new twist. Something with whiskey…

TIDBITS: This hotel has the oh-so-cool option of an intimacy kit. What does the kit include, and do you think the concept will inspire excessive friskiness?
KLAUS: The Hotel Modern wants the guests to have access to whatever they need during their stay which means a fully stocked mini-bar! The intimacy kit is just one of the many specialty items we offer in the rooms and it contains lots of fun little things. You can also take it home with you and get frisky there!

TIDBITS: Fill in the blank: Home is…
KLAUS: I’m originally from Germany and now live in New York, but I always feel at home in my hotels. Especially The Hotel Modern. For me nothing is greater that to sit looking out on Lee Circle, watching the streetcars pass in front of General Lee. The sun is setting, I’ve got a glass of wine in my hand and I am home.
